IIT Mandi Campus information

The Indian Institute of Technology Mandi is part of the second generation of newer IITs, founded to enhance technical education and research in India. Located in the scenic Kamand Valley of Himachal Pradesh, about 14 kilometers from the town of Mandi, the institute is nestled on the banks of the Uhl River, surrounded by the picturesque villages of Kamand and Salgi. The region’s unique geography contributes to a diverse climate, ranging from hot and tropical in the lower regions to cold, alpine, and glacial conditions at higher elevations. Mandi itself, situated at an elevation of 1,044 meters (3,425 feet), experiences a wet-sub temperate climate, with an average annual rainfall of 1,380 mm.

Since its establishment, IIT Mandi has been deeply involved in innovative Research and Development (R&D) initiatives, collaborating with numerous national and international universities, research centers, and organizations. The institute was formally recognized as an IIT under The Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011, a move aimed at broadening the scope of technical education in India. This landmark legislation passed in the Lok Sabha on March 24, 2011, and in the Rajya Sabha on April 30, 2012, marked a significant step towards fostering global academic and research partnerships.
