The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are a testament to India’s post-independence vision for scientific and technological advancement. Founded in the mid-20th century, these prestigious institutions were established to nurture a new generation of engineers and researchers who would drive the nation’s progress.

  1. Undergraduate IIT Admission Process: Through JEE Main and JEE Advanced (B. Tech).
  2. Postgraduate IIT Admission Process: Through GATE (M. Tech)
  3. Doctoral IIT Admission Process : Through individual IIT Ph.D. admission processes, often with entrance exams and interviews.
  4. Special Pathways: Direct Admission for foreign nationals, DASA/CIWG, Lateral Entry.

To take admission in an IIT, the first step for any student is to appear for the JEE exams. You can take this exam after completing your 12th class. The exam is conducted in two stages: the first is JEE Main, and the second is JEE Advanced.

It’s first step to take admission in IIT through B. Tach :-

  • Candidates must have passed their 12th standard (or equivalent) examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
  • There is no specific minimum age limit to appear for the JEE Main exam.
  • JEE Main is a national-level exam and serves as the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced.
  • Exam Conducted in CBT Mode (Computer based test)
  • Only candidates who clear JEE Main and rank among the top candidates are eligible for JEE Advanced.
  • JEE Advanced is the final exam used for admission to undergraduate programs (B. Tech) at the IITs.
  • After Clearing JEE Advance :
    • You must register for Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counseling, where seats at IITs (and other institutes) are allocated based on rank, preferences, and availability of seats.

To pursue a Master of Technology (M. Tech) degree at an IIT, you need to qualify for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) exam.

  • Eligibility:
    • Candidates should have a B. Tech/B.E. degree or its equivalent (or in the final year of their undergraduate studies).
  • Purpose: GATE is a national-level exam that tests candidates on engineering subjects and their understanding of mathematical concepts.
  • Mode of Exam: GATE is a Computer-Based Test with questions based on the subject you choose and general aptitude.
  • After Clearing GATE:
    • If you clear GATE with a good score, you can apply for M. Tech programs at various IITs.
    • Candidates are admitted based on their GATE score and the department’s requirements, and the admission process usually involves counseling or interviews (in some cases).

b. Direct IIT Admission (without GATE)

In some cases, IITs also admit highly qualified candidates (such as top B. Tech graduates from IITs or candidates with exceptional academic records) directly without GATE scores. However, this is rare and varies by institution.

Doctoral (Ph.D.) IIT Admission Process

If you want to pursue a Ph.D. at an IIT, the admission process generally includes the following:

  • Eligibility:
    • Candidates must have a Master’s degree in a relevant field or a B. Tech/B.E. degree (with a good academic record).
    • Some IITs may require the candidate to have a GATE score, while others may accept a relevant academic background.
  • Application Process: Each IIT has its own Ph.D. admission process. Candidates must check individual IIT websites for deadlines, eligibility criteria, and specific procedures.
  • Selection Process:
    • Written Test and/or Interview: Based on your academic background and the area of research you are applying for, you may need to take an entrance test or directly appear for an interview.
    • Research Proposal: Candidates may be asked to submit a research proposal outlining their area of interest and the topic they wish to pursue for their Ph.D.

Apart from the standard admission routes (JEE, GATE), there are some special cases in which candidates may be admitted to IITs:

a. Direct IIT Admission Process for Exceptional Candidates (DASA/CIWG)

  • DASA (Direct IIT Admission Process of Students Abroad) and CIWG (Children of Indian Workers in the Gulf) are schemes that offer direct admission to candidates from Indian-origin families residing abroad or children of Indian workers in Gulf countries. This is mainly for B.Tech programs at IITs.

b. Lateral Entry (Direct Admission to Second Year of B. Tech)

  • Some IITs offer lateral entry for candidates with a 3-year diploma in engineering or technology. These students can join the B. Tech course directly in the second year.

c. Foreign Nationals

  • Foreign nationals can apply to IITs through a separate process. Typically, this involves applying directly to the IIT under a special quota, and the admission process may not involve JEE Advanced. The eligibility criteria, admission process, and required documentation differ for foreign nationals.
