About Course

For centuries, humans have mastered the art and science of navigation, developing tools and techniques to determine location and plan routes. Navigational skills have been crucial for commercial, economic, and military success. Predicting when and where one will arrive at a distant destination is not just key to empire-building—it can be a matter of life and death.

Through videos, texts, infographics, and Worldwide Telescope tours, we will delve into the tools and techniques used by navigators, with a special focus on the importance and challenges of measuring longitude. By understanding the principles of position, direction, speed, and time, we will explore the difficulties of navigating without GPS. We will also examine how the Age of Exploration and global trade spurred scientific advancements in navigation, and how celestial bodies like Jupiter’s moons, lunar eclipses, and the work of clockmakers guided historical navigators.

The progress in navigation over the centuries has enabled humans to reach the moon and send spacecraft to comets. This course will illustrate how these advancements were achieved and how they continue to help us navigate today.
